I always wanted my own business.

When I was in college, I got my MBA thinking I was going to own my own business someday. But after college I ended up in a good job with benefits, and it’s hard to give up a good job with benefits. I don’t know that I ever would have had the guts to quit and go out on my own, but luckily for me I was laid off in 2009 when the economy went south.

I figured that was the universe telling me it was time to do my own thing.

But. . .I had no idea what I wanted to do. So, my first stop was the Small Business Development Center and they helped me brainstorm some different ideas. I always loved the idea of franchising because you get the whole kit and caboodle and don’t have to start from scratch. The franchisor provides you with training, mentoring, a recognizable brand, and a proven system to follow. Additionally, I had always heard that the odds of being successful owning a franchise were a lot higher than starting something on your own.

However. . .I always thought franchising = something like McDonald’s = way out of my budget! The SBDC assured me that there were plenty of franchising opportunities within my budget, and they put me in touch with a franchise consultant who helped me explore my options. I filled out the confidential client profile and had multiple phone calls with my consultant so she could get to know me better and match me with the right businesses. She came back to me with six different franchise brands that fit my personality, my budget, and my goals. One of her suggestions was a senior care franchise, which I had never even heard of before. But after doing some research, I realized that she hit the nail on the head and that really was the perfect franchise for me.

I owned my Home Helpers Home Care franchise for 13 years and that gave me the experience and confidence to start several other businesses as well. After running a successful franchise for so long, I had the opportunity to sell it, realizing the investment I put into it and moving on to my next career.  

I am so grateful for the help that I received in getting my business started all those years ago that I reached out to IFPG to find out how I could become a franchise consultant myself, so I can help other people achieve their dreams of business ownership and financial independence. As author Rodger Fritz says, “Nobody gets rich working for someone else!”

Yes, that is something that an experienced franchise professional, with a deeper understanding of the opportunities in today’s marketplace, will regularly do for their clients. If you love coffee, you’ll probably gravitate to a looking at coffee franchises, even though owning a coffee franchise has very little to do with loving coffee. You owe it to yourself to understand what franchise models best align with your existing skills and we’ll help get that picture into focus.
  • If you need financing, we can refer you to 3rd party lenders who specialize in financing franchises. All too often someone’s life’s dream of franchise ownership is squashed by their local bank’s loan officer who many have little or no experience in lending to potential franchisees.
